Akino Kondoh’s Surrealist Animation "Ladybirds’ Requiem" [Video]
We know you’ve seen the 25 videos selected by an esteemed jury for the Guggenheim-organized YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video, but perhaps you haven’t had the time to go through every single video.
I’d like to draw your attention to a video by Akino Kondoh, a Japanese artist based in New York. Here is the digest version of her 5 minute short, “Ladybirds’ Requiem.”
This gorgeous manga animation is full of sinister surprises. The harmless yet disconcerting music jolts us to and from fiction and reality. Our provocative Japanese girl pulls us into her adventures, backed by the sounds of East Asian tonalities, modern synths, and high-frequency sounds that characterize the scary movies of two decades ago. It is wonderful and peculiar.
