Hong Kong Set to Release 3D Porn Film, Mainland Tourists Can’t Wait (NSFW)

In May 2011, Hong Kong will finally be releasing the long-awaited erotic 3D film, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy. If I weren’t smarter, I might think that title was meant for a 3D interactive ride or roller coaster. Though I guess, in a way, it could be.

3D Sex and Zen is a reimagining of the popular and surprisingly lucrative 1991 Sex and Zen, itself based on Li Yu‘s seventeenth century erotic novel, The Carnal Prayer Mat (full text in Chinese). Producers, fully intending to spread their affectionately made art worldwide, have created up to a dozen different versions of the film for buyers and regions requiring various levels of censorship, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

With a budget of $20 million Hong Kong dollars — about $2.58 million U.S. dollars, no small price for a porno flick — 3D Sex and Zen claims to be the first feature erotic film shot in stereoscopic 3D, reportedly with digital effects done by the group who worked for Tim Burton on The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m not sure if that means the film will end up being in stop-motion or what, but it does sound rather prestigious!

But clearly director Christopher Sun Lap Key has gotten something right: the rights to distribute the title were picked up by Italy, France, Peru, Russia, and Singapore during the American Film Market after an eight-minute preview in 3D was screened. Additioanlly, rights were pre-sold for New Zealand, Australia, and Korea in Cannes (I didn’t realize they screened that sort of fare there!).

And as our friends at The Dark Side HK are clear to take note of, Mainland tourists are already panting to see the film, as six travel agencies already have sought advance tickets to screen the movie. In China, of course, this nudity baloney is censored and systematically regulated.

IMDB provides a rather clumsy synopsis of what exactly it is that we’re sweating after:

As a conceited scholar of the Ming Dynasty, Wei Yangsheng believes that since life is short, one should pursue the ultimate sexual pleasure as time allows. Wei Yangsheng encounters Tie Fei the Taoist priest’s daughter, Tie Yuxiang, on an occasion. With the former’s talent and the latter’s beauty, they fall in love at first sight, and Wei Yangsheng is later married into the Tie’s family. Yuxiang is elegant and courteous under the influence of her father’s faith, though her lack of passion cannot fully satisfy Wei Yangsheng’s sexual needs. His disappointment is no less than his affection for her.

Looks like those 3D glasses you stole from that one Avatar screening may come in handy once again.
